A NURSE is recovering at home after being stabbed at Furness General Hospital.
Police were called to the hospital at around 9am on Monday after reports of a disturbance involving a patient on ward seven.
Sarah Goulding, 22, from Barrow, was rushed into surgery after being injured by glass from a broken light fitting.
A 47-year-old clinical nurse from Ulverston suffered a minor head injury during the same incident.
She has since returned to work. Miss Goulding, who only recently started work as an FGH staff nurse, is now recovering at home.
Her father James Goulding, from North Row, Roose, said: “They took Sarah straight into surgery and removed pieces of glass from her arm.
“She has just qualified from Blackpool Victoria Hospital and started her job at Furness General four weeks ago. We’ve always encouraged her to pursue her dream to become a nurse because we felt she was the perfect person for the job.
“You never think something like this is going to happen, not in a place like a hospital. We thought this job would suit her down to the ground because of her personality.”
Miss Goulding, a former pupil of Park View school, in Barrow, was visited last night (Tues) by police who interviewed her about the incident.
- A 42-year-old man from Barrow was arrested on Monday on suspicion of wounding and criminal damage. He has been bailed to return to Barrow police station on September 24 while an investigation is carried out. Louise Fleming, a spokeswoman from University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, said the man was a patient at FGH and had since been returned to hospital. Ms Fleming said: “Following his arrest he was deemed unfit to be detained and has been re-admitted to Furness General Hospital. He is in an isolated room and under 24-hour police escort.”
