Full steam ahead to railway expo

A HUGE model railway exhibition is set to be staged in Cumbria this weekend, and will feature models from Furness.

The Workington Transport Heritage Trust Model Railway Exhibition is being held in Moorclose Sports Centre, Workington tomorrow and Sunday. Opening times are 10am-5pm and 10am-4pm respectively.

The display will have more layouts and more traders than any other similar event in the county.

The Victoria Road layout is coming all the way from Bradford.

For those interested in foreign trains, a very unusual layout, based on a three metre Swiss rack and pinion line will come from Barrow.

From Millom, there will be a large ‘N’ gauge layout of Dalton. Other layouts will be coming from Carlisle, Cockermouth, Cleator Moor, Maryport, Whitehaven and Workington. For the younger enthusiast a new layout based on Thomas the Tank Engine will be available for them to operate, along with at least one other from the former Cumberland Toy and Model Museum.

To help people get started in modelling or who want to know ‘how to do it’ a selection of demonstration stands will be available. If you have a model that is not working or needs fixed then you are welcome to take it along. Plastic modellers and even model engineers will be able to help as well.

A whole host of trade stands will be coming from around the country.

There will be a selection of supporting stands including the Cumbrian Railways Association with copies of recent books for sale, and will be taking orders for a new one to be published in the New Year covering the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway.

The trust is still looking for more help with raising funds, either as a sponsor or actually helping at events. Contact Alistair Grey, secretary, on 01900 67389.
