UP to 2,000 music fans helped Barrow Live! rock the town as the second annual music festival kicked off yesterday.
The event proved a massive hit with people of all ages who packed into the area in front of Barrow Town Hall throughout the day to listen to bands on the main stage, with DJ and acoustic sets in a smaller tent.
The Canteen and The Barrow and Furness Music Project made this year’s event bigger and better, and its success means they are already planning similar events for 2009.
Talented Barrow musician and singer Jon Byrne appeared with his new band, and his loyal fan base cheered him on as he performed a range of quality old and new tunes.
The crowd later enjoyed the musical talents of Sonic Boom Six, singer Miles Hunt and Erica Knockalls from 1990s indie favourites The Wonder Stuff, and the seminal 1980/90s DJs, Coldcut.
The event also saw top acts such as excellent Manchester band Spokes, Tim and Sam’s Tim and The Sam Band and Major Major make an appearance.
A visible police presence throughout the day ensured the event was trouble-free with only the odd wannabe stage diver causing concern.
Organiser Gary Robinson said at least 2,000 people poured through the gates between 1pm and 10pm, making it one of the most successful local music events this year.
He added that he was looking at having at least four similar music festivals at venues in the town next year.
The Barrow Live! 2008 event was sponsored by West Lakes Renaissance, NWDA, Barrow Borough Council, BAE Systems Submarines, The Canteen, Club M and Abbey FM.
