Dalton rhinos meet South African rugby stars

THE Rhinos met the rhinos at South Lakes Wild Animal Park yesterday afternoon.

As part of their UK tour, the South African Rhinos rugby league team were invited to visit the park and its two baby rhinos.

The players met Nyala and her mum Ntombi, rounding off a successful stay in Furness. The team were the guests of the Barrow and District League and played a Cumbria amateur side on Wednesday night at Craven Park, losing 44-34.

Vice-chair of Rugby League South Africa, and tour manager, Nico Pretorius said the squad had enjoyed their visit to the area.

He said: “It’s been fantastic. We have been able to go into the mayor’s den and see where he sits every day and they told us about the history of Barrow. It has been very interesting and the people have been very nice.

“It was great to go to the wildlife park. We have got a lot of rhinos in South Africa although they are also in parks – they do not roam around freely. It’s been a good experience and it’s a cute baby.”

The team will now head off for a game against Yorkshire followed by a clash with the British Amateur Rugby League Association’s international side.
